EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is going to start the off-season training program with a surgically repaired left ankle. The Giants announced that Manning had arthroscopic surgery Thursday to relieve some lingering discomfort in the ankle he sprained in the regular-season finale against Washington. The two-time Super Bowl MVP has been rehabbing the ankle for more than three months, but it was still bothering him. Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, N.C., performed a debridement, removing dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. Manning expects to be able to run in six weeks. Manning is coming off one of his worst seasons. The 33-year-old who will be entering his 11th season threw a career-high 27 interceptions playing behind a decimated offensive line that allowed him to be sacked 39 times. He completed 317 of 551 passes for 3,818 yards and 18 touchdowns. His quarterback rating of 69.4 was his lowest since a 55.4 in his rookie season in 2004. "Im looking forward to the start of the off-season program on the (April) 21st," said Manning, who has started 151 consecutive games. "I will be in the weight room and in the meeting rooms so we can all learn the new offence. I got some good work in this week at Duke, and I think its smart to get this procedure done now so the ankle isnt an ongoing issue. Im eager to get to work with our new offensive coaches and system." The Giants will hold organized team activities May 28-30, June 2-3, June 5, June 9-10, June 12-13, and a mandatory minicamp June 17-19. Coach Tom Coughlin hired Ben McAdoo as the new offensive co-ordinator after Kevin Gilbride retired after last season. There also is a new quarterback coach, Danny Langsdorf. The Giants (7-9) scored 294 points, the lowest total of the Tom Coughlin era. They finished 28th in the NFL in total yards (307.5 a game), 29th in yards rushing per game (83.3) and 30th in yards per carry (3.5). New York has missed the playoffs the past two seasons. Drouin, from Corunna, Ont., bested his own record of 2.38 metres set in Aug.TSN Baseball Analyst Steve Phillips answers several questions surrounding the game each week. This weeks topics include the Jays treatment of Brett Lawrie, Nationals manager Matt Williams two differing responses on Bryce Harper, the challenges that lie ahead for baseballs new commissioner and what to do about ballplayers who use PEDs. 1) After only three innings of action on Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays were forced to place third baseman Brett Lawrie back on the 15-day DL. Was he rushed back into action, or is this injury another one of those things that happens over the course of a baseball season? Is it possible the Jays felt pressure with their lack of deadline moves and the team discontent that stemmed from that situation to get Lawrie back into the lineup as soon as possible? Lawrie lasting only three innings does not scream of bad decision-making in the medical department. He was on the DL with a broken finger and is now back on the DL with a strained oblique. I guess you can wonder whether the trainers did enough to replicate baseball activities and the rotation necessary to play the game while he was injured, but it isnt completely fair. Sometimes, stuff happens. I think this situation screams even more loudly what a lost opportunity the trade deadline was for the Jays. Ownership has let Jays fans down with their decision-making. If the season were to end today, the Jays would not make the playoffs. They have slid back to the pack so substantially, that the pack is now passing them. The Yankees may or may not make the playoffs, but they just won three of four from the Detroit Tigers. Guys like Chase Headley, Stephen Drew, Martin Prado, Brandon McCarthy and Chris Capuano are making major contributions. GM Brian Cashman anticipated a need for depth, so he acquired more players than were obviously needed. I know what you are thinking - they are the Yankees and they have money to spend. But all of their acquisitions were of second and third tier players. They didnt break the bank. This was the year to go for it for the Jays. Instead, they stood pat while others improved. Dont blame John Gibbons and dont blame Alex Anthopoulos. This is strictly an ownership issue. I feel bad for the Jays fans. Teams often come up with slogans for the season. It can be a rallying cry for the fans, players and media. The slogan this year in Toronto is - Sometimes, stuff happens. 2) There has been some talk of the possibility that the Washington Nationals could send struggling star Bryce Harper down to the minors. Manager Matt Williams has since squashed the rumours by saying its something they are not considering as a possibility. But should they? Would a short stint in the minors help Harper get his head right and turn around his season, or would it stunt his growth and/or make him bitter and angry at the team? Matt Wiliams attacked the media in Washington before their game against the Mets on Wednesday for asking the question posed above. What was bizarre about it is that on his weekly radio show in the morning, Williams answered the exact same question in a very reasonable way. He said, Generally, if you have young players, thats what you do. But this guy is a special young player. Something must have happened between the morning interview and Williams meeting with the media before the game. Maybe Harpers agent Scott Boras caught wind of the speculation and called GM Mike Rizzo to complain. Maybe Harper heard it and had a panicked conversation with his manager. Whatever happened, it sent Williams into a rage when asked the same question about the possibility of sending Harper to the minors. I would caution everybody in this room, he started. The minute you think you can read my freaking mind, youre sorely mistaken. It (ticks) me off to even think about, that somebody would take a comment I made on the radio and infer I am thinking one way or another. Ive had it. Dont do it anymore. Bryce Harper is one of the guys on our team, hes a very important part of our team. Just like everybody else is. Do we understand each other? Its not fair to the kid, its not fair to the rest of the guys in that clubhouse to even think about sending Bryce Harper to the minor leagues, or to cause a stir. Its unacceptable. It wont happen. That seemed pretty angry and pretty definitive. A pretty defensive response for a manager whose team is in first place by five games. Williams needs to take a deep breath. The question is a reasonable one for a struggling young player. Now heres a question for you: Is Bryce Harper a great player? I know theres a ton of potential in him considering his exploits as an amateur. I know hes only 21-years-old. But hes a career .284 hitter. The most home runs he hit in a season is 22 and the most runs he has driven in is 59. He hit .228 with two homers and three RBI in July and was hitting .158 in August when Williams was asked the question. Harper has been significantly less than great. There is no shame in sending a player to the minor leagues to clear his mind and work on his game. It allows him to get out of the spotlight. At AAA he wouldnt have dozens of microphones in his face asking him what is wrong and why are you struggling. Sometimes it helps to take one step back to take two steps forward. There are no scholarships in the big leagues. Its about production. If Bryce Harper is going to be a superstar, theres nothing about being sent to the minors that would change that. In fact, it might get him going more quickly. I know Harper hit a game-winning homer in Thursdays game against the Mets. Everyone is now saying, See, I told you so. He doesnt need to go to the minors. Before the homer, however, he was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. If you believe the saying that, youre only as good as your last at bat, then Harper starts this day as a stud. But there are no guarantees in baseball. Harper may or may not have his confidence back. He may or may not be fixed. If Harper continues his struggles, someone will have to work up the courage to ask Matt Williams the question about the minors again. It just wont be me - because Matt Williams scares me. 3) Next week, owners of the 30 Major League teams are going to elect a new commissioner. Who should get the job? Bud Selig will be stepping down in January and his replacement will be one of three men: Rob Manfred - MLBs chief operating officer; MLBs executive vice president of business Tim Brosnan and Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner. All three of the candidates, which were selected by a seven-person search committeee, are from within baseball and it will take 23-of-30 votes to earn approval for selection as commissioner.dddddddddddd Each of the three candidates brings experience in their own substantial way. Rob Manfred has been the point person for Bud Selig in communications with the players association. Hes been part of the most successful runs of labour peace in modern sports history. He also has a keen understanding of internal baseball and business operations. He helped craft the strongest drug policy in professional sports. Brosnan has helped foster and spread the exponential financial growth of the industry and negotiated their impressive national television rights deals. Tom Werner is the chairman of the Boston Red Sox and formerly owned the San Diego Padres. Hes also a member of the Television Hall of Fame as served as executive producer of a number of very successful television shows. Its a bit surprising that the search committee is not presenting a candidate from outside of the game. Certainly an understanding of the game is critical to running the leagues, but baseball is in need of outside of the box thinking in a desperate way. The game is losing its fan base at a record pace. Theres a disconnect between the fans and the players. Kids find it far easier to relate to the NFL and NBA. The pace of the game needs to change. Baseball needs to market its stars in a much more substantial way. I thought for sure that Bob Bowman, CEO of MLBAM, would be a candidate to consider. MLBAM includes MLB.com, MLB.tv, MLB Radio, BaseballChannel.TV and MiLB.com. It generates close to a billion dollars a year in revenue. And MLBAM is known for its creative and innovative technological developments including the MLB At Bat app. Bowman is a businessman and a visionary who gets things done. The only problem is that he is a no-nonsense, brash and abrasive personality that has rubbed owners the wrong way. So it shall be. The new commissioner will come from the three nominees mentioned above. The voting will take place next Thursday at the owners meetings and will continue until one of the candidates gets the required 23 votes. The speculation was that Rob Manfred would get the votes necessary to win but recently a number of anti-Manfred owners have been pushing for Tom Werner. Tim Brosnan doesnt seem to have the support that the other two have but he could emerge as a compromise option between the factions of owners. It will certainly be fascinating. For the record, I would vote for Rob Manfred. I believe that his working knowledge of the office and his relationship with the players association will be very important. Baseball must reframe itself in the eyes of its fans and yes, Manfred feels a bit connected to Bud Selig so he will have to surround himself with creative, forward thinkers who understand the 18-35 male demographic. I dont think that just because he worked for Selig - who is old school in his thinking - limits Manfreds ability to grow the game in the right direction. When I was an assistant GM for the Mets, I worked for a very good baseball man in Joe McIlvaine. Joe was an old school guy and when I succeeded him, I wasnt limited by his thinking. I completely restructured our scouting department, computerized the entire baseball department and used stats and sabermetrics in a way never considered before by the Mets organization. That all said, Manfred can be his own man. No matter who gets the job, there will be challenges ahead. Play Ball! The most recent developments in the Biogenesis scandal in baseball reminds us that we will never be rid of PEDs. As long as theres money to be made, the chemists will stay ahead of the testers. Players will always look for an edge, especially with millions of dollars as a payoff. Sure, the players have agreed to increase the first-time penalties to 80 games - up from 50 games. Second-time offenders now lose an entire season and third-time offenders are banned for life. This is a nice gesture by the players, but it will not stop everyone from cheating. The DEA rounded up Tony Bosch and his co-workers from Biogenesis. This investigation will certainly drum up more evidence and information than the MLB one previously. The Feds have subpoena power that baseball didnt have. We are hearing that more names will be exposed than the 14 major leaguers suspended a year ago. Certainly baseball will want those names and may very likely discipline the additional offenders. From the investigation will come helpful information as to the production and distribution chain of the drugs. We will learn, in detail, how professional and youth players were recruited by Biogenesis and like companies. The prosecution of these drug dealers will certainly put a scare in others doing the same. Give baseball credit. Previously, it was the government that pushed baseball or more accurately its union into stricter drug policies. This time around, it was baseball that was the aggressor. The commissioner spent millions of dollars on the investigation of Biogenesis. Baseball brought evidence and information from some of the scoundrels arrested on Wednesday. And this time, it pushed the Feds into pursuing this issue. But baseball needs the justice system to help them out again. The Feds have never been interested in pursuing the users of PEDS - they seemingly only want to stop the production and distribution. Back when Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and others were implicated in the investigation of BALCO Labs, it was only BALCO founder Victor Conte who was a target for prosecution. Bonds found himself in trouble not for drug use, but rather for hindering the investigation. Its time for ballplayers who use illegal PEDs to be arrested and to serve time for their crime. The drugs they are using are illegal and they are illegally obtained. Some players share them with other players and thats illegal as well. The Feds need to prosecute players just as they do the labs. Nothing has been a deterrent for the players. They use PEDs and serve 50-game (now 80-game) suspensions and then signed multi-year, mega-million dollar deals. Melky Cabrera signed a two-year, $16 million deal with Toronto a couple of years ago after his suspension. Jhonny Peralta was punished for his steroid use with a four-year $53 million deal from the Cardinals last off-season. Please punish me like that! I am begging you! If players have to spend 60 days in jail for using PEDs, Ill bet they start making different decisions about what they put in their bodies. Lock them all up. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO - As England endures its worst World Cup for more than 50 years, Wayne Rooney wants his teammates to remember the pain of this debacle. Less than a week into its Brazil campaign, England is already out of contention after losses to Italy and Uruguay. Not since 1958 had England failed to make it to the second round of a World Cup it qualified for. "Its vital we take the pain we are feeling now and remember that and the next tournament we dont want to feel that again," Rooney said Saturday. "Obviously we are hurting," the striker added. "We are really disappointed to be out of the tournament. I am sure you can imagine its quite tough, a long few days for us." The players will sign off with a Group D finale against surprise leader Costa Rica on Tuesday when Rooney wants the teams pride restored. "These next few days will be tough, but we have to be strong together as a team," Rooney said. "We have to make sure we are positive for the next game." For goalkeeper Joe Hart, Englands 2-1 losses in Brazil are his worst moments in football. "Its a strange empty feeling," Hart said. "This is ultimately really cruel and gutting for me." Roy Hodgson is set to remain in charge going forward, with the Football Association asking the coach to see out his contract to the 2016 European Championship. And Rooney can see progress under Hodgson, who took charge before Euro 2012. "He has brought a great enthusiasm to the team ... Roy is the man to take us forward," Rooney said. "We appreciate what he has done for us. He has changed the way we have played." ___ Rob Harris can be followed at www.twitter.com/RobHarris Fake NFL Jerseys Online . No surprise there. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, Just watched the shootout in the Coyotes/Leafs game and I have to ask, why was the James van Riemsdyk goal allowed to count? All of the video replays we were shown on TV were inconclusive about whether the puck had entirely crossed the line or not. Neither ref made an attempt at blowing the whistle or pointing at the net and no call was made on the play as it was sent right to the video replay judges. Only after the replay was reviewed was the goal allowed to count. Paul Devorski told Coyotes coach Dave Tippett that he was sure it was a goal. If Devorski was so confident it was a goal then why didnt he signal a goal and blow the whistle? Why did he send it to the video replay? Their indecision and explanation do not seem to match up. Your insight would be greatly appreciated as it appears the Leafs were the recipients of the proverbial home ice advantage! Thanks,Chad Conner in Phoenix Chad, After witnessing JVRs ultimate shootout goal, neither referees (Rob Martell and Paul Devorski) signaled a goal nor did they make a waive off. Understandably, they appeared uncertain and indecisive as they searched to find the puck from underneath Smiths pads. The puck did not become visible until Smith wisely and carefully manipulated his pads from inside the net and kicked his feet forward until the puck appeared well out in the middle of his goal crease. Since no signal was made by either referee as required, I must assume they did not and could not see the puck across the goal line. As such, they were unable and unwilling to make an initial call. The only alternative for Martell and Devorski at this point was to pass the decision upstairs to video review which has become the safety net for the official. Video review rendered an inconclusive verdict since no camera angle was available to clearly demonstrate the puck crossing the goal line due to the obstructed view from Smiths pads! The call then reverted back to the referee(s) on the ice for a final decision. Referee Rob Martell was on the head set throughout the video review process. The referee was either provided with input and assistance from upstairs and/or Martell used common sense and logic to deduce that since the puck was under Mike Smiths pads and Smiiths pads were across the goal line a legal goal should be counted.dddddddddddd. I agree with the referees ultimate decision in that it is most logical and probable that the puck completely crossed the goal line. I have personally stood on the goal line and signaled a goal when the puck was caught by the goalkeeper with his glove across the line and then pulled his glove and the puck forward out of the net. The puck was in the glove and the glove was across the goal line and inside the net. I also counted goals when the goalkeeper carried the puck across the line and into the net. I made these decisions immediately and without hesitation. There was no video review to act as a safety net. Even when the review process was implemented I wanted to see the play and make the call. - This very late decision by the on-ice referee Thursday night following video review highlights at least two flaws in the current system. The first is that two different standards can be applied in determining goals. Video review must clearly see the puck across the goal line with an unobstructed view before they will verify a goal. The evidence must be unequivocal! If this cant be achieved video review personnel render an inconclusive verdict even in cases where it appears logical that the puck would have crossed the line. - The referee, on the other hand, as we saw demonstrate on this call, allowed a goal to stand by applying logic, common sense and the power of deduction to determine that in his judgment the puck had crossed the goal line. My recommendation is to provide the referee with the authority to review controversial goals at ice level (including goalkeeper interference) and have the final authority and judgment in these matters. The optics on JVRs ultimate goal determination looked ridiculous! Referee Martell (and Devorski) did not make a decision on the play in real time. Martell then spent several minutes communicating through a head set and staring into space. Following the inconclusive review verdict, Referee Martell was forced to render a final decision - one that he was unable or unwilling to make in real time! The Refs are supposed to make a call one way or the other in real time; let them also make the final decision through the video review process, As Referee Rob Martell demonstrated Thursday night, thats in their job description and what they get paid to do! Long-standing doubts have been cast over the legitimacy of the participants intentions. Many have surmised that both Jim and Jim were in on the melee and the whole episode was rehearsed. If thats the case, it did no favours for either party, as Rome in particular struggled to book guests in the wake of the incident. Neither party has ever admitted to staging the fight, and the sentiments were likely real. TORONTO -- On a day when Julio Cesar essentially said farewell to Toronto FC, fellow goalie Joe Bendik opted not to talk to the media. Perhaps he was ceding the day to the Brazilian No. 1, one reporter surmised. A day later, Bendik came clean. Chatting with journalists had conflicted with his tee time Tuesday. The 25-year-old American keeper, who shot a round of 79, comes with a certain amount of swagger. That ego took a jolt when, after winning Torontos No. 1 job in 2013, Bendik lost his starting role in pre-season to Cesar. "A hit to my pride today but luckily Ive got tons of it! Going to take in everything I can from a top shelf gk (goalkeeper) to better my abilities," Bendik tweeted, with a colourful adjective before tons, when Cesars signing was announced in February. Three months later, Bendik is back as Torontos No. 1. Cesar has left the club for the World Cup and is not expected back, with Englands Queens Park Rangers looking to cut short the loan agreement with MLS. Bendik says he is a better goalie for having spent time with the 34-year-old Cesar. "He did things for my career that I couldnt do over 20 years, probably," said Bendik, his post-practice calendar apparently a littler clearer Wednesday. "Just to see him play, see his professionalism was amazing. "Now I have to step in and start to play some games and continue what I did last year. And continue what Ive done the last three games." Cesar gave way to Bendik for both legs of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinal against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Bendik also played in Saturdays 2-0 league win over the New York Red Bulls when Cesar was laid low by the flu. Bendik came to Toronto in a December 2012 trade with Portland. The Timbers got forward Ryan Johnson and goalie Milos Kocic in exchange for Bendik, the third overall pick in the 2013 SuperDraft and allocation money. At the time, the goalie component of the deal seemed like a swap of backups with Bendik taking over for Kocic -- who believed he should have been No. 1 in Toronto -- behind the oft-injured Stefan Frei. But when Frei was injured in the first pre-season game in Florida in 2013, Bendik took over and started 33 games for Toronto. Frei was traded to Seattle at the end of the season and Bendik was rewarded with a new contract. When he heard Cesar was coming to Toronto, Bendik said he knew it could go "either amazing or terrible. Luckily its amazing." It helped that inside the team, word was that Cesar was likely going after the World Cup. Rather than being left out in the cold, Bendik knew in essence that he was having an extended training camp -- while having the opportunity to learn from one of the best goalies in the world. It was no coincidence that Nelsen, praising Bendik after he helped Toronto win a penalty shootout in the Amway Canadian Championship, said he would not be surprised to see his young keeper earn a call-up to the U.S. national team after the World Cup. Cesar was moving on. Bendik was back. For Nelsen, the Cesar acquisition was always a marriage of convenience with a short timeline. Cesar needed a place to play ahead of the World Cup and QPR wanted some salary relief. Toronto got a world-class goalie, a tutor for Bendik and the invaluable publicity of seeing Toronto FC by the name of Brazils goalkeeper at the World Cup. Having Cesar around would also help settle fellow Brazilians Gilberto and Jackson. Plus the short-term nature of the relationship means that the club will have some salary cap space come the summer. It was win-win. "Its benefited the league, its benefited the club and its benefited every single player here at Toronto," Nelsen said. It helped that Cesar, like Englands Jermain Defoe and American Michael Bradley, was a good citizen with an ego seemingly in check. They may be stars, but they dont act like it. Cesar met the media only periodically in Toronto. But he was always relaxed when he did, his arm invariably around translator Daniel Correia. "Thats Nellie," Bendik said, referring to Nelsen. "I think his No. 1 prerequisite is you have to be a good guy. You have to be a character in the locker-room. If youre not, he doesnt really care for it." Cesars relaxed way was infectious. Bendik, for one, says the Brazilians message was to let mistakes go, to look ahead rather than behind. When that advice comes from a Serie A goalkeeper of the year and Champions League winner, you tend to listen. "When he came, right away he took me under his arm and he wanted the best for me right from the start," Bendik said. "That helped me a lot to embrace the moment." Its help that Bendik says he will pay forward -- if he finds himself playing in his mid-30s with a young goalie. "I hope Im half the way he is," he said of Cesar. "Its been fantastic," said backup goalie Chris Konopka. "Working side by side with Julio, with the Brazil No. 1, hes as focused as he will ever be because hes preparing himself to be on the world stage, for basically the No. 1 team in the world," he added. "All eyes are going to be on him. It was definitely a unique and great experience working side by side with him." The goalies arent the only ones to praise Cesar. Captain Steven Caldwell says playing with Cesar has been one of the highlights of his career. "The impact hes had on me and everybody else at this football club is huge," said the Scottish defender. "In such a short space of time, for everybody to have the pleasure to see what its like to be a top, top professional and an outstanding goalkeeper is a real pleasure." "An outstanding human being," added Caldwell. The whole team plans to stay in touch with the Brazilian, by means of a chat group during the World Cup. No one will cheer louder than the Toronto FC dressing room if Cesar gets to hoist the World Cup. NMD R1 Mens Australia .Y. -- Dallas Stars coach Lindy Ruff had an opportunity to experience an entire range of emotions in his first trip back to Buffalo to face his former team.MILWAUKEE -- Giannis Antetokounmpo is the rookie who gets most of the attention for Milwaukee. It was another first-year player who made the biggest shot Tuesday night to give the Bucks a rare victory. Nate Wolters hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to give Milwaukee the lead for good in a 104-100 win over the Orlando Magic. With an NBA-worst 10-43 record, Bucks coach Larry Drew is giving plenty of minutes to young players. Antetokounmpo and Wolters made key contributions both offensively and defensively in the final minutes against Orlando. "They hit a dagger, that shot Nate hit," Magic guard ETwaun Moore said. Wolters missed 26 of his first 29 attempts from 3-point range this season but is 5 for 11 in the teams last four games. "Im feeling a lot better from 3. Im going to shoot with confidence, and hopefully I can keep it up," he said. "Ive been playing so many minutes. Coach is giving me the opportunity, so I have to knock some shots down." His 27-foot jumper with 6 seconds left on the shot clock helped Milwaukee snap a four-game losing streak. "I didnt have much time so I just decided to pull up and shoot it," Wolters said. "Sometimes those are the easiest ones, when you know you have to shoot it. Its nice to get a win." After Wolters gave the Bucks the lead, Antetokounmpo stole the ball from Arron Afflalo and was fouled, making one free throw for a 100-97 advantage. "I was focused tonight," Antetokounmpo said. "For a rookie that means a lot to be focused down the stretch, especially being a little bit panicked." Brandon Knight overcame a bizarre foot injury for the Bucks, scoring 18 points and making two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to seal the victory. He played 34 minutes despite slicing his foot open on a baseboard while stepping out of his bathroom shower Tuesday afternoon. Knight, unavailable for comment after the game, missed 10 of 13 shots from the field but hit all 12 of his free throws. Before the game, he said he was unsure whether he could pplay.dddddddddddd. He started anyway. The Bucks made 22 of 30 free throws, while the Magic went 9 of 16. "The free throws were the big thing," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "Their ability to get in the bonus and get downhill and get into the lane was a big part of them winning." Orlando fell to 3-24 on the road. Despite snapping their four-game skid, the Bucks have lost 19 of 22 overall. Afflalo scored 21 points and Nikola Vucevic added 19 for Orlando. After Antetokounmpo made the free throw that gave Milwaukee a 100-97 lead, Afflalo missed a 3-pointer. Ersan Ilyasova hit a pair of free throws for a 102-97 advantage. Jameer Nelson made a 3 with 6 seconds to go to make it 102-100. Knight was fouled and made both free throws to clinch it. Caron Butler, returning after missing four games with a sprained ankle, led the Bucks with 21 points on seven 3-pointers but didnt score in the fourth quarter. Afflalo shot 9 of 15 to snap a mini-slump. The Magic guard had made only 15 of 44 shots in his past four games. Vucevic took a pass from Nelson and made a 14-foot jumper to give Orlando (16-39) a 97-96 advantage with 50 seconds left, its first lead since 4 minutes remained in the third quarter. Antetokounmpo capped Milwaukees 8-2 run to open the fourth. He blocked a layup attempt by Kyle OQuinn and hit John Henson for a dunk, giving the Bucks an 89-81 lead with 8:57 to go. Orlando scored the next seven points to pull to 89-88 on Maurice Harkless 3-pointer with 6:44 left. Butler made six 3s and the Bucks led 53-47 at halftime. It was only the 10th time in 53 games that Milwaukee has led at halftime. NOTES: Milwaukee F Khris Middleton left in the first quarter after twisting his ankle, but returned in the second. ... O.J. Mayo, who had missed nine consecutive games with what the Bucks termed "illness/conditioning," was expected to play limited minutes but remained on the bench the entire game. Drew said he had hoped to play Mayo, but was unable to due to game circumstances. ' ' '

TAMPA, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguezs spring training locker has been kept open by the New York Yankees. Suspended for the season for violations of baseballs drug agreement and labour contract, Rodriguez had used the stall just to the side of the back entrance of the clubhouse at Steinbrenner Field. There was no nameplate on it Friday and no uniforms hanging inside. Carlos Beltran was assigned the adjacent locker. Rodriguez is eligible to return next year, when he turns 40, and has three seasons remaining on his record $275 million, 10-year contract. Masahiro Tanaka, the Japanese pitcher signed to a $155 million, seven-year deal, was given the locker used by Mariano Rivera, who retired after last season. Speaking through a translator, Tanaka said he was informed of that by a Yankees staff member. "Im not really sure if I should be here," he said of the stall. Reliever Shawn Kelley was given the locker of retired pitcher Andy Pettitte. It didnt take long for the Yankees to reassign Robinson Canos No. 24, giving it to Scott Sizemore. Meanwhile, the Bengals have gotten a stronger ground game out of Jeremy Hill. The rookie running back wasnt on the Colts radar in Week 7. He totalled just 155 yards rushing over the first five games of the year, and ran for 15 yards against the Colts. Now, he leads all NFL rookies with 1,124 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground, a threat the Colts (11-5) are preparing for.Our one biggest thing on our game plan is you must stop Hill, defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois said. The Colts have battled injuries for much of the season, including starting right guard Hugh Thornton (shoulder) and A.Q Shipley (ankle), who started four games at centre and a game at left guard.Backup offensive lineman Joe Reitz returned this week after missing the previous three weeks with an ankle injury. On Wednesday, the Colts placed Gosder Cherilus on injured reserve. The right tackle, who has a groin injury, started 13 games.Thats just part of Indys worries. The Colts feel like they have a whole new Bengals team to prepare for. They give you a lot of problems as far as diagnosing, getting lined up, and playing assignment football, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. Theyre playing fast, theyre playing physical. Of course, with Hill running the way hes running and the offensive line doing extremely well, its going to be a huge challenge for us.NOTES: Shipley (ankle) and Thornton (shoulder) didnt practice Thursday. . Next came a layup, then a follow shot as he was fouled for a three-point play, then a layup as he was fouled for another three-point play. Cousins made all seven of his shots in the third quarter on his way to a 35-point, 14-rebound performance, and the Kings snapped a three-game skid with a 102-97 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night. "I just had to come out and set the tempo for the second half and try to get my teammates involved," Cousins said. "So that was my main thing." He did it on both ends, helping his team outrebound New Orleans 47-30. Sacramento pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, a big reason for the Kings 22-4 advantage in second-chance points. "We dominated," Cousins said, referring to the Kings rebounding. "That was one of our key points going into the game tonight." Ray McCallum, starting at point guard because of Isaiah Thomas right thigh injury, had 22 points and 10 assists. He also committed only one turnover in nearly 44 minutes. "I have a great opportunity to go out there and play, and Im trying to make the most of it," McCallum said. "Being a rookie playing against great players, you cant be out there turning the ball over." Rudy Gay also scored 22, including a momentum-swinging 3-pointer after the Pelicans had pulled within a point in the fourth quarter. Reggie Evans grabbed 12 rebounds before his ejection for an elbow to Anthony Davis face on a collision that occurred as Evans went up for a close-range shot. Davis, returning from left ankle injury that forced him to miss a start on Saturday, had 22 points. Anthony Morrow scored 23 points and Tyreke Evans 15 for the Pelicans, who have dropped two straight on the heels of their season-high, five-game winning streak. "We just did not have a great level of sustained effort," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said, adding that Cousins was a "tough cover." "A number of times we had double-teams down there and he just bulled through the double team and ggot to the basket," Williams said.dddddddddddd Kings coach Mike Malone, who built a reputation for coaching defence as an assistant with Cleveland and later for New Orleans under Williams, was dismayed by the 55 points the Kings allowed in the first half, but was pleased by his teams response thereafter. "We bludgeoned them on the glass," Malone said. "Its a very good win for us on the road against a team thats playing well." Sacramento used a 14-6 third-quarter run to lead by as many as 12 points. The surge started with Cousins saving the ball along the baseline and slinging a pass to McCallum, who in turn found Ben McLemore sneaking in behind the defence for an alley-oop dunk. There were two more dunks during the spurt. Cousins powered up through a crowd of players under the basket for a two-handed jam which gave him 26 points at that point -- and 5,000 for his four-year career. McLemore, who had 14 points, ended the spurt with a breakaway dunk set up by Travis Outlaws steal from Darius Miller. But New Orleans closed the period on an 8-0 run during which Evans was ejected. Officials conferred while watching a replay before calling the flagrant-2 foul on the Kings forward, who responded to the crowds applause of his dismissal by smiling and raising his arms as he walked to the tunnel. Davis, who remained face-down on the court for several seconds after the foul, got up and hit both free throws. Then Morrow added a 3 to make it 80-76. Morrow got the Pelicans as close as 84-83 with a jumper in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Gay responded immediately with a 3 from the corner, and McCallum added two jumpers to make it an eight-point game. New Orleans never got closer than four points again, and McCallum finished with 10 points in the period. "Hes definitely going to be a big part of this team," Cousins said. "With each game hes growing, his confidence is growing. So hopefully he continues down that path." Notes: In his first season as a head coach, Malone went 3-1 against Williams team. ... Jared Cunningham played 4:17 in his first game since being signed by Sacramento. He had two points and a rebound. ... Pelicans C Jeff Withey had a career-high five blocks. ' ' '

According to a report from ESPN, the Green Bay Packers have re-signed the cornerback to a four-year, $39 million deal with a $12.SAN DIEGO -- The NCAA tournament has a new darling after one of the most improbable finishes in the NCAA tournaments long bracket-busting history. Got Jacks? Pulling off a comeback for the ages, feisty Stephen F. Austin became the latest No. 12 seed to pull off an upset, tying the game on Desmond Haymons did-that-just-happen four-point play with 3.6 seconds left, and then holding on in overtime for a 77-75 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night. "Well, miracles truly do happen," SFA coach Brad Underwood said. Pretty regularly these days. Its been a wild ride in the NCAA tournament already, a two-day run filled with upsets, buzzer-beaters and millions of crumpled brackets across the country. SFAs victory marked the fifth overtime game during the round of 64, a tournament record. SFA didnt have the biggest upset of the opening two rounds -- Mercer probably gets the nod there with its win over Duke -- but the Lumberjacks certainly had the most jaw-dropping finish. Heres how it went down: The South Regions No. 5 seed, VCU (23-10) was firmly in control after its swarming defence flustered SFA during a big second-half run. The scrappy Lumberjacks (32-2) kept hanging around and clawed their way back in the closing seconds. Two missed free throws by VCUs Jordan Burgess with 10 seconds left gave SFA a chance. The Lumberjacks worked the ball around to the wing, where Haymon launched a 3-pointer and was fouled by JeQuan Lewis just before the ball fell through the basket. "I just tried to get out and contest it," Lewis said. "(I) jumped to the side a little bit and kind of fell into him. The ref called a foul." Haymon still had some work to do, though. The crowd still buzzing, VCU coach Shaka Smart called a timeout, trying to ice Haymon. The senior didnt seem to mind, returning to the court to calmly knock the free throw down. "I was struggling shooting the ball and I knew to get it going, I was going to have to continue to try to find it (his touch)," Haymon said. "I guess I found that groove with the last shot." The tension still wasnt over. Following a missed desperation heave at the end of regulation, Haymon put the Jacks ahead in overtime on a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left. VCUs turn at glory came after SFAs Thomas Walkup made 1 of 2 free throws put the Lumberjacks up 2 with 14 seconds left. The Rams got a good look on the final possession, working the ball around to Lewis for an openn 3-pointer on the wing.dddddddddddd His shot went long, the Lumberjacks grabbed the rebound, then stormed the floor after improbably extending the nations second-longest winning streak to 29 games. Jacob Parker scored 22 points and Haymon had 17 for SFA, which moves into Sundays third-round game against the Tulsa-UCLA winner. Treveon Graham had 19 points, Burgess 14 and Lewis finished with 13 for the disappointed Rams, the third No. 5 seed to lose this tournament. "Honestly, I thought we had it," Burgess said. "We had them on the ropes, but they came back and made some tough shots and important shots to win the game." Every year, the NCAA tournament has a feel-good team fans lock onto, like Florida Gulf Coast and Dunk City last year. SFA certainly had qualifications to be this years darling: A fun-loving group of players led by a long-haired shooter they call Sunshine, a frenetic style -- at least when it comes to half-court defence -- and the nations second-longest winning streak at 29. But for Lumberjacks to become the latest lovable lower seed, they had to get past VCU, a team that had been-there, done-that with the whole underdog thing. The Rams had a magical run of their own, reaching the 2011 Final Four, and have been consistent winners since, reaching the NCAA tournament four straight years. Oh, yeah, VCU has that defence, too. Its called Havoc and it has created more turnovers and steals than any other team in the country the past two seasons. SFA plays a little D of its own -- more of the half-court variety than the Rams -- so naturally tipped passes, floor burns and scraps for loose balls filled the arena when they met on the court for the first time. The Lumberjacks picked their way through the havoc with pinpoint passing on backdoor cuts and the interior, taking a six-point lead into halftime on Parkers last-second 3-pointer. VCU made the game more chaotic -- Havotic? -- with its pressure to start the second half and started working the ball inside, racing through an 11-0 run to go up 52-43. The Rams stayed in control most of the half, but missed four free throws in the final 32 seconds to give the Lumberjacks a shot at victory. "I like the way we battled the majority of the second half, but we just didnt finish the game," Smart said. "We kind of gave them a glimmer of hope." The Jacks ran with it, earning their spot in NCAA tournament history with one improbable shot. ' ' '

Ronaldo poked the ball in at the front post after a corner, putting some shine on a muted performance by the Real Madrid striker. Ronaldos 40th international goal cancelled out Kevin Strootmans 17th-minute opener, the midfielder driving a low left-foot shot into the corner of the net from just outside the area. The Dutch teams recent good form gave it the edge in the first half, though it needed some inspired second-half defending to keep the Portuguese out until Ronaldos late breakthrough. Ricardo van Rhijn twice intervened to deny Danny and Ronaldo from close range after the break, then goalkeeper Michel Vrom leapt acrobatically to tip Ronaldos shot wide in the 63rd. "We corrected what we were doing wrong after the interval and in the second half we were top quality," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "We had a lot of chances ... and the goal was a just reward.dddddddddddd" In official competition, the Dutch have won their first six World Cup qualifying games and are seven points clear in Group D, as well as unbeaten over the past year. Portugal has been a lot less impressive, recording four wins, two draws and a loss in its bid to reach the tournament in Brazil. The Portuguese lead Group F with 14 points, two more than second-place Russia, but the Russians have two games in hand. That Dutch sharpness under coach Louis van Gaal told from the outset, with Arjen Robben repeatedly unsettling the Portuguese defence. But Robin van Persie, named Oranje captain after Van Gaal dropped Wesley Sneijder, was mostly a spectator before being replaced after an hour. Injuries to three key midfielders -- Nani, Joao Moutinho and Raul Meireles -- weakened the Portuguese challenge. Even so, Ruben Micael had a clear chance to level the score in the 28th when the ball reached him, unmarked, at the back post but he shot wide as two Dutch defenders slid in. ' ' '

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Nick Rimando tied the MLS record with his 112th shutout in 10-man Real Salt Lakes 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night. Rimando needed a diving save in the 94th minute to tie the record set by Kevin Hartman in 2012. Salt Lake (8-4-9) won the Rocky Mountain Cup by beating Colorado (8-7-6) in the first two games of the three-game, regular-season series. Javier Morales scored in the 14th minute for Salt Lake. Chris Wingert won a loose ball in Colorados defensive end and found Morales open inside the box. Salt Lake played nearly the entire second half a man down after Aaron Maund was handed a red card in the 46th minute for taking down Colorados Vicente Sanchez just outside the penalty area. Wingert received a yellow card in the 34th minute and will miss the next match on an accumulation suspension. Colorado was shut out for the second time in three days. Keibert Ruiz Dodgers Jersey . Peter Dawson took his long before he started the job. "I was playing an American one year at Oxford Golf Club, and he introduced me to this travelling mulligan," Dawson said. "As you know, we dont have them over here. I was 2 down with four to play and on the par-3 15th, I shanked one. So I said to him, Ill have my mulligan now. And with my next shot, I had a hole-in-one. I think he was so rattled that he lost the match. I never allowed myself to take another one. I had to keep my record intact." Dawson is keeping another record rather tidy, somewhat by coincidence. He announced last month that he will retire in September 2015 as secretary of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club and chief executive of The R&A, a business division he wisely created 10 years ago. He will have served 16 years, the same tenure as the three R&A secretaries before him. What sets him apart is coping with perhaps the most challenging times in the clubs 260-year history. He is proud of a central role he played in getting golf back into the Olympics for the first time in more than a century, and Dawson will stay on as head of the International Golf Federation through the Rio Games. One of his favourite moments was gathering British Open champions at St. Andrews in 2000 to celebrate the millennium, an exhibition that brought together the likes of Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros on a glorious late afternoon at the home of golf. But the Royal & Ancient game has been moving at warp speed over the last two decades, and Dawson has been in the middle of it. He took over in 1999, about the time Callaway introduced the thin-faced ERC driver with a trampoline effect that was not allowed by USGA, yet approved by the R&A standards. That three-year period of golfs ruling bodies not being on the same page is the one "working mulligan" Dawson would have wanted. Three years later, the R&A and USGA published a "Joint Statement of Principles," and pledged to work more closely together. The most recent example was the decision to publish a new rule in 2016 that will ban the anchored stroke used for long putters -- a putting stroke used to win each oof the four majors over the last three years.dddddddddddd There remains strife among leading golf organizations over the ban, though Dawson isnt budging. He also has heard plenty of criticism about changes to the Old Course at St. Andrews, seen as sacrilege by purists who believe the R&A is changing golf courses instead of reining in technology. And in September, the R&A Golf Club is to vote on a proposal to allow female members for the first time, which Dawson endorses. The vote is two years after Augusta National invited female members to join for the first time. Was it all enough to make Dawson want to retire? "That was just normal course of business," he said dismissively. "Quite often, the media perception of what is weighing heavily on us is not particularly so." What weighed heaviest on Dawson, and still does, is striking the balance between technology and skill. There is pressure from one corner to slow the golf ball and reduce the size of drivers, and pressure from another corner to make the sport easier at a time when golf participation is in decline. "Keeping the balance right has been the biggest intellectual challenge," Dawson said. He is comfortable that the R&A and USGA got it about right. That will be debated long after Dawson leaves, and it figures to confront the next R&A chief. Dawsons reputation, unlike that of predecessor Sir Michael Bonallack, was built on management more than golf, and it was the right fit for the times. The next R&A chief could be a blend of both. No obvious candidates have emerged in the last month. Asked for the best qualifications, Dawson mentioned someone steeped in the values of golf, with commercial and international experience, and two other attributes -- diplomacy and humility. "One of the things you have to do as a governing body is to treat golf as a sport, as opposed to a business," Dawson said. "Other bodies might put business first because of priorities. The commercial side of what we do is very important to allow us to fulfil the governance role, and you cant lose sight of that. But I view golf first. Business is close. If youre scrambling for finances, its difficult to maintain your principles. So the financial success is important to sport." ' ' '

TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading on Tuesday and the topics discussed were the availability of Max Pacioretty and Evander Kane, possible landing spots for Martin Erat, NHL expansion and more. Is Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty being shopped? McKenzie: Absolutely not, according to the Canadiens and their general manager Marc Bergevin, but it may be a splitting of hairs because teams in the NHL are calling the Canadiens and asking them about the availability of Pacioretty. The Canadiens are listening to offers, they are not saying hes available but his name is in play. How about Evander Kane of the Winnipeg Jets? McKenzie: Similar situation to Pacioretty as teams in the NHL are seeing an uneasy relationship between Kane and head coach Claude Noel and teams are curious to see if the Jets are interested in moving Kane. He has not asked for a trade, the Jets are not shopping him but teams are certainly monitoring the situation to see if Kane could be pried out of Winnipeg. The Capitals paid a steep price for Martin Erat on last years deadline day and it has not worked out well with zero goals in his last 23 games and he was a healthy scratch in the Capitals last game. Are there any teams interested in Erat? He has asked for a trade. LeBrun: There are interested parties and part of that is because his contract goes down to $2.25 million next year, so it is a cap-friendly contract in terms of salary. The Vancouver Canucks are among the teams that have some level of interest in Erat. Hes an easier player to trade than say Sharks forward Martin Havlat will be in San Jose. We expect the Calgary Flames to make a move at some time this year, whos generating the most interest there right now? Dreger: Teams are calling about Mikael Backlund, no surprise there, specifically the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are looking for a third line centre as well as a puck moving defenceman. Carolina has made an offer on Backlund but theres no fit there just yet. The Flames also need an age-comparable player in terms of their return. LeBrun: Busy times in Carolina. The Hurricanes have a couple of players on their trade block including Tuomo Ruutu, Jiri Tlusty and Tim Gleason, who it sounds like will be the first player traded out of Carolina. Gleason has a contract with a couple more years left on it at $4 million but if they can move him, I believe then they could turn around and trade for a guy like John-Michael Liles. Liles has been parked in Toronto because of his contract. For the Hurricanes to take Liles, they need the Leafs to take Ruutu and Leafs currently have no interest in picking up that deal. Michael Del Zotto has been on the block in New York and has been linked to Ottawa. How serious have the talks been there? Dreger: There has been a back and forth between the Senators and the Rangers. It is quiet now but Senators GM Brian Murray did throw out names like Erik Condra, Colin Greening and Eric Gryba. The deal is currently not a fit for the Rangers but those three players were made available in that discussion. Commissioner Gary Bettman talked about expansion and said nothing was imminent. What is happening? McKenzie: Bettman said there was no formal process in place but you have to believe there may be an informal process that is in the works. We know the NHL wants to get to 32 teams, the question is when it could happen. The absolute earliest you could add teams to the NHL would be the 2015-2016 season, just less than two years away. The league needs a one-year lead time on that, therefore if anything is happening, it will escalate over the next ten months. Is there any chance the Olympic roster deadline gets moved? LeBrun: Not according to Rene Fasel. The IIHF had a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday and they will meet again on Wednesday but the message from Fasel to Russia, Sweden and Finland, who wanted to extend the deadline, is no. The deal made with the NHL and NHLPA will remain at December 31, 2013. Any news on the Leafs Dion Phaneuf contract front? Dreger: Phaneufs agent did make a ballpark offer a couple of weeks ago, the contract being in the seven to eight-year range with the finances above $7 million per year. GM Dave Nonis is expected to counter within a week. How is Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne recovering? LeBrun: Rinnes MRI has been pushed back to next week and the talks between the Anaheim Ducks and Predators are also on hold because the Ducks have an injured goalie in Viktor Fasth. I dont see Jonas Hiller being traded in the near future. McKenzie: An extra note, Jonathan Ericsson is on the verge of signing a multi-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. Fake Nike Shoes . THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Zach Johnson is like most players at the World Challenge, not sure whether hes still playing in 2013 or if hes in the middle of the new wraparound season that officially started in October. All he knows is that hes leading. Johnson, who already has two official PGA Tour events under his belt in the "new season," came out a few days early to the unofficial World Challenge to work on new equipment with Titleist at its test centre in Carlsbad, and to meet with his team of coaches to outline goals for 2014 and to identify weakness. One priority is to score better on the par 5s, and Johnson wasted little time on that. Sherwood has five par 5s. He made birdie on four of them for a 5-under 67, giving him a one-shot lead over Matt Kuchar. Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson were at 70, while tournament host Tiger Woods missed short putts at the beginning and end of his round and had to settle for a 71. "A highlight that were looking into next year is trying to play those holes a little bit better," Johnson said of the par 5s. "I dont know what I did that today. I hit it close. I had good shots in there with the proper spin, nothing more than that. But youve got to take advantage of them. Youve got five of them. The thing is ... one errant shot, youre staring a 6 right in the face, if not more. Theres a lot of penal areas." Johnson said he still considers Kapalua to be the start of the season. Woods, meanwhile, is still trying to get his head around the schedule change. He hasnt played an official tournament in the 2013-14 season. The only event he played was the Turkish Open, where he tied for third in the European Tour event. After this week, he wont play again until Torrey Pines at the end of January. Thats his usual starting point, except that the PGA Tour already has had six guys win tournaments. "To me, Im still on the old calendar, so to me this is the end of the year," Woods said. "I know that Im going to be pretty far behind on points by the time I tee up again, and thats just kind of the way its going to be. ... But you have the entire summer, you have the entire major championship season, you have the big events and then the playoffs. Anything can happen. But its going to be interesting to see how far behind some of us are when we start." This sure didnt feel likke summer.dddddddddddd The temperature was in the upper 20s before the sun came up in the foothills of the Santa Monica mountains. There was a one-hour frost delay. A combination of firm turf, chilly weather, some breeze and firm greens made for tough scoring, and it showed. Steve Stricker was among those under par until a bogey-bogey-double bogey finish put him at 75. Jordan Spieth, coming off a sensational rookie season and playing for the first time since the HSBC Champions in Shanghai a month ago, had a 77 and was last in the field. Jason Day, who won the individual and team title at the World Cup two weeks ago at Royal Melbourne, had a 76. Rory McIlroy, with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki following him, was hopeful of building momentum from his first win of the year last week in the Australian Open. He missed a few short putts, found the water on the par-3 15th and had a 73. He played with defending champion Graeme McDowell, who had a 72. McDowell saw a note that his last eight rounds at Sherwood were in the 60s. That streak ended Thursday, though for good reason. "The course hasnt been this tough in a couple years," McDowell said. "The scoring reflects that. The greens are much firmer. The speed of them caught me by surprise a little bit today. My speed was a little clumsy, and it showed today on the greens." This is the final year the tournament is being played at Sherwood. It moves to Isleworth just outside Orlando, Fla., next year. Any rust Woods felt had to do with the greens, which he said showed on some of his putts. "I made a few mistakes today," Woods said. "I also hit a couple of good shots that ended up in some interesting spots. That can happen out there. I shot about the score ... maybe could have gotten one or two more out of it." Johnson had few complaints. He opened with two birdies, and then surged ahead on the back nine with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch, three of them on the par 5s. Johnson has a pair of runner-up finishes at this event, and with the tournament moving, this is his last shot at Sherwood. "I did everything decent," he said. "Just a real solid day all around. I was aggressive when I needed to be aggressive, and I was conservative when I needed to be conservative. Its nothing more than a decent start." on that. ' ' '

Throughout the NHL playoffs, I have forecasted each round simply by using shots on goal and goaltender save percentage to come up with a baseline for the series. Its not intended to be some magical formula and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. This remedial statistical method has gone 9-5 in picks through the first three rounds. Heres a quick look at the five series that went the wrong way: In the first round, Columbus came in ahead of Pittsburgh, though that required Sergei Bobrovsky to perform better than Marc-Andre Fleury (not an impossibility given Fleurys playoff track record), but Fleury and Bobrovsky each had a .908 save percentage in Round One and Pittsburgh dominated puck possession to an extent that they did not during the regular season. Minnesota upended Colorado, in Game Seven overtime, which wasnt altogether surprising. I would have easily been able to talk myself into the upset had the Wild not gone into the series with Ilya Bryzgalov as their starting goaltender, because the Wild were a superior possession team. Darcy Kuemper returned for four games and helped tilt the series back in Minnesotas favour and Semyon Varlamov, whose regular-season play fueled the Avalanches top seed finish, was only okay in the postseason, posting a .913 save percentage in seven games. The touchiest series for this years playoffs was the San Jose-Los Angeles matchup in Round One. The forecast had the Sharks favoured by the slimmest of margins (18.15 expected goals to 18.09 expected goals) and, when they had a 3-0 series lead, that coin flip looked to be falling the right way. We know how that has turned out since that point. In the second round, the Boston Bruins were favoured over the Montreal Canadiens, and while the Bruins controlled large portions of the series, they couldnt solve Carey Price, who had a .936 save percentage in the seven-game upset. Then, in the Conference Finals, the forecast put the Chicago Blackhawks over the Los Angeles Kings, due to a goaltending advantage, because Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick hasnt been great in this years playoffs. After what was a sensational series, it was safe to say that neither team held a goaltending advantage -- both Quick and Corey Crawford struggled -- and the Kings took Game Seven in OT. So, those misses are on the record as we head into the Stanley Cup Final. The expected goals for each team in the series are determined by taking each teams shots for and against over the course of the season, as well as through the first round of the playoffs, and splitting the difference. So, for example, the New York Rangers, over the regular season and playoffs have averaged 32.4 shots on goal per game and the Los Angeles Kings have allowed 27.0 shots on goal per game; the average of those two numbers, 29.70 shots, is the number that is then multiplied by (1 - the opposing goaltenders save percentage) to determine an expected goals per game for the Rangers. Finally, the number is multiplied by seven to indicate an expected goal total for a seven-game series. Theres no guarantee that scoring more goals in a series will result in winning four games first, but the odds certainly favour the team that scores more. So, lets see how the numbers shake out for the Final: Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Los Angeles 31.5 27.0 Jonathan Quick 0.912 16.54 N.Y. Rangers 32.4 29.1 Henrik Lundqvist 0.922 18.30 Verdict: While the Kings and Rangers are very similar in their playoff puck possession rates, the Kings were tops in the league during the regular season and ran through a more difficult gauntlet in the Western Conference to reach the Cup Final. The difference in shot rates during the regular season is pretty small, however, with the Kings earning 54.7% of the shots as the Rangers earned 53.0% of the total shots. Over the course of a game, that amounts to about one extra shot on goal; hardly the kind of difference that couldnt be overcome by better goaltending. Which brings us to the advantage to which the Rangers will cling. Lundqvist has been one of the games top goaltenders since coming into the league in 2005-2006, and is performing at a high level in this years playoffs as well, so couldnt he stop an extra shot or two per game? At the other end, Jonathan Quick has traditionally been a very good playoff goaltender in his own right, but his .906 save percentage this year has dropped Quicks all-time playoff save percentage to .922, falling fractionally behind Lundqvist. Certainly, some of the blame for this seasons save percentage can be attributed to the calibre of teams that the Kings have faced on their way to the Cup Final, with San Jose (sixth), Anaheim (first) and Chicago (second) all among the top-scoring teams in the league this season. By comparison, the Rangers got through Philadelphia (eighth), Pittsburgh (fifth) and Montreal (21st), so there is some quality of competition favouring Quick. It would be an upset if the Rangers won the series but a seven-game series, if otherwise close, can easily be decided by goaltending and, right now, its not unreasonable to hold higher expectations for Lundqvist. Lets see if King Henrik can get the job done. Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. After 8-4 and 3-2 losses, the latter in walk off fashion, Jose Bautista was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bone bruise in his left hip. The slugger said he was injured on a scoring play, in a home game a couple of weeks ago, and the pain continued to build to the point he removed himself in the fourth inning on Tuesday afternoon. "It just kept getting worse and worse and worse," said Bautista. "It got to the point, (Tuesday) after a day off and taking anti-inflammatories it just got to enough pain that I got a little worried. Decided to go check it out and it was no surprise from the doctor that I was in some pain." Bautista will remain with the ball club has takes to rest and treatment for the injury. One week from now, Bautista will begin to ride the exercise bike. Toward the end of his stint on the disabled list, Bautista is eligible to return for the September 6 game in Minnesota, hell be reevaluated and if given the green light by doctors, will begin baseball activity. "Im not expecting to be shut down," said Bautista. You know, thats good to see." Reyes was at short, Lawrie at third in the first game of Tuesdays doubleheader with the Yankees. TORONTO -- After a wobbly playoff debut, Raptors star DeMar DeRozan returned to attack mode for Game 2 against the Brooklyn Nets. The 24-year-old Toronto guard had just 14 points in Game 1, with eight of those coming from the free throw line, in a 94-87 loss to visiting Brooklyn that saw DeRozan miss 10 of 13 shots. On Tuesday, a different DeRozan took the court. As he approached the Nets basket, it was if his brain was in overdrive as it diagrammed possible plays. The possibilities seemed endless -- dish off to a teammate, drive to the basket, pull back and take a shot. The Raptors will need more of the same Friday when the series switches to Brooklyns Barclays Center for Game 3. While Toronto preaches a team approach, the Raptors know good things happen when DeRozan is rolling. "I was just trying to feed him," Toronto guard Greivis Vasquez said of Game 2. "I was just trying to get him the ball -- it was just Go, go. We need you to get confidence." Mission accomplished. DeRozan finished with 30 points, 17 of which came in the fourth quarter when he made four of five shots and nine of 11 free throws. He finished the game on five fouls, hanging his head at one point at the end of the bench while his teammates huddled during a timeout. But he was on point when he returned to action in the 100-95 win. DeRozans fourth-quarter output was just two points off the club playoff record of 19, set in 2001 by Vince Carter against Philadelphia. Again and again, DeRozan answered the veteran Nets as they tried to claw their way back. For coach Dwane Casey, DeRozan showed his maturity by taking the shots the defence was giving him rather than trying to force things. "Hes growing," said Casey. "Hes still not a finished product. Weve just seen the beginning of a guy becoming a star." Tuesdays playoff performance was clearly a big step forward on DeRozans young career path. "He knows he can do it in a high-intensity situation," said guard Kyle Lowry. "It just show hes growing," he added. "Hes an all-star for a reason." DeRozans practice regimen includes a variety of difficult shots. He also lifts weights before each games, so he feels like he has the strength to hoist shots from all angles. "If I feel I can get the shot off, I feel like it has a good chance of going in," DeRozan said. It showed Tuesday. His scoring was of the spectacular variety, bringing the sellout crowd of 20,382 to its feet. "You never know what kind of shot youre going to need to shoot at a certain time," he said. Vasquez drove baseline at one point before firing the ball back to the six-foot-seven DeRozan, who attacked the basket, transferred the ball from his right hand to his left in the air and then dunked with authority, "An unbelievable dunk," said the six-foot-six Venezuelan. "I dream about those dunks because I cant even dunk." "He really deserves everything he gets, all the attention and all that stuff he gets because hes our franchise player, hes our best player," he added. "I think for him to do what he did (Tuesday) night was a really huge step to shut a lot people up -- Dont talk about me because Ive got it." DeRozan, meanwhile, said the difference between Game 1 and 2 was he was more aggressive and decisive. How important is DeRozan to the Raptors? He led the team in scoring 42 times during the 2013-14 regular season. He was tied for ninth in league scoring (22.7), fourth in minutes (38.4), fourth in made free throws (519) and fifth in free throws attempted (630). In Brooklyn, Toronto will continue to look to take advantage of its speed and athleticism while hoping to maintain its advantage on the boards. Casey is also looking for a better start to the third quarter, rather than waiting for the fourth to kick into the high gear. "We are the top fourth-quarter team in the league but we cant wait until the fourth quarter in the playoffs," he said. "Weve got to come out hard-charging out of the locker-room." The series marks Torontos first playoff action since 2008. When they do give up some, obviously hes played well for them. Marek Zidlicky then scored at 18:09 for New Jersey and Ryder added his second of the game with 50.5 seconds left to make it 4-3.Its tough, Allen said. I just wanted to bear down and give them nothing. You had 1 minute left to get two points and lay it on the line. We got it. We squeezed it out.Blues coach Ken Hitchcock felt the team let Allen down the last few minutes.I feel bad for him, Hitchcock said. Its a win but it feels a little bit like a loss because we let the guy down because he was so good. Jersey came in with real purpose; they really pushed us hard.Cory Schneider made 22 saves for the Devils. He was pulled in favour of Keith Kinkaid after Steen scored on a power play at 7:10 of the third period.Tarasenko got the Blues on the board just before the end of the first period with another highlight-reel goal. He got the puck from Schwartz in the slot, manoeuvred to his left through three Devils, then pulled Schneider out of position before lifting the puck over him at 19:55.Hes probably the hottest player in the league right now, Schneider said. You cant deny his skill. I tried to out-wait him but hes real patient and got it up at the end which I wasnt sure he was going to be able to do. It was another nice goal from him.Schwartz made it 2-0 at 11:05 of the second when he took a long clearing pass from Barret Jackman and skated in alone on Schneider. Schwartz put a wrist shot over Schneiders right shoulder for his sixth goal.NOTES: New Jersey began a stretch of playing 15 out of 20 on the road. ... Schneider has started all 13 games for the Devils. ' ' '
