The optics of this are...not great"One of the oddest stories of this Antworten

young Kansas City Royals season has centered around Brian Goodwin. The Royals traded for Goodwin last July Randal Grichuk Jersey , and while Goodwin suffered a foot injury that sidelined him for weeks, Goodwin grabbed some more playing time in September and seemed a lock to make the 2019 roster. But on March 25, the Royals cut Goodwin and simultaneously selected the contract of Lucas Duda. It was a curious move for numerous reasons. First, it didn’t fit at all with the so-called ‘Process 2.0,’ as the Royals replaced the speed and defense of Goodwin with the plodding, bat-only contribution of Duda. Second, it didn’t fit at all with the youth movement, as the Royals jettisoned a 28-year-old with multiple years of control in favor of a 33-year-old on a one-year deal. Third, it left the 25-man roster in bizarre sorts, with the bench consisting entirely of one backup catcher (Cam Gallagher), two backup first basemen (Duda and Frank Schwindel), one superutility player (Chris Owings) Jose Bautista Jersey , and one pinch runner and emergency fielder (Terrance Gore).Early returns have been biting. Goodwin has a fantastic triple slash of .333/.385/.500 in 13 games with the Los Angeles Angels, who snatched him up to help fill in for the injured Justin Upton. Meanwhile, Duda has a .340 OPS in seven games with the Royals, and Owings has a .452 OPS in 13 games with the Royals. Moreover, it sure seems like the Royals screwed over Goodwin—at least that’s what an April 11 article by the Los Angeles Times seems to report. Baseball is a business. Nobody will blame a front office for making personnel moves that may have negative ramifications for some players. That is simply a result of a variety of factors, some of which—maybe even most of which—are out of a player’s control at any given time. With that being said, the optics here are awful for both the Kansas City front office and coaching staff. General manager Dayton Moore has a reputation for doing right by his players as humans and earning their loyalty. Letting go of Goodwin is, on its face, reasonable, but really bizarre once you dig in. First, the Royals traded for Goodwin—not merely picking him off the scrap pile—insinuating that the organization valued him. Then, the Royals led him to believe that he would be a part of the 2019 team , a very reasonable assumption considering how bad the Royals were in 2018 and how thin their farm system was in the upper minors. Goodwin was even comfortable with his roster spot enough that he tinkered with his swing in spring training. None of that mattered. The Royals then cut him, instead turning towards a combination of Duda, Owings, and Gore to fill Goodwin’s spot. All we can do here is read between the lines. But if Goodwin thought that the Royals might have released him, the LA Times story wouldn’t basically be “Goodwin was surprised at being cut.” And if the Royals thought that they might potentially release Goodwin, you would think they would have told him so he could make a case for himself in spring training rather than playing mad scientist with an important part of his game. The jury’s still out on whether or not releasing Goodwin was a baseball mistake, as 13 games does not a season make. But it sure seems like it. Either way, it’s hard not to come away from this thinking that the Royals, at the very least, intentionally misled Goodwin here. When he signed a one-year contract worth $4.5 million last winter, Fernando Rodney was expecting to close the door on playoff-race victories at Target Field. He’ll get the chance to do that this week but it won’t be with the Minnesota Twins. Instead, he’ll be doing it for an Oakland Athletics squad that has surged back into the thick of the American League West Division and wild-card races. He hopes to get an opportunity to pitch Friday when Oakland continues its four-game series versus Minnesota.Article continues below ...Rodney has been outstanding since joining his new squad. He has yet to allow a run and has not walked a batter through his first six appearances with the A’s Marcus Stroman Jersey , who have lost two in a row but have won eight of their last 12 games. They are 1 1/2 games back of Houston in the AL West but four ahead of Seattle for the second and final AL wild-card spot.“He’s been absolutely terrific,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said of Rodney. “For a guy that’s used to pitching the ninth inning, we’ve asked him to do some different things here and he’s had absolutely no problem with it. Pitching a down game (Wednesday).“So he just wants to come in and contribute however he can. He’s got a really good personality to him and fits in really well with the guys. Obviously, he’s been a significant factor for us.”Rodney was the last of six veterans dealt away by Minnesota after the team failed to take a step forward after a surprise run to the wild-card game a year ago. He had posted a 3.09 ERA and converted 25 of 31 save opportunities before the Twins shipped him to Oakland for minor league right-hander Dakota Chalmers. There he joined a bullpen that also added Jeurys Familia and Shawn Kelley to a group that included Blake Treinen and Lou Trivino.“I think we were very blessed to have men that have come from other teams in Familia, Kelley and Rodney,” Treinen said, “that are willing to buy into what we have going already. Whatever role they end up putting us in, I think we’re all OK with it. I wanna continue to do my best because I know there are two All-Star closers behind me who could easily do my job.”After dropping consecutive games for the first time since they were swept by Colorado from July 27-29, the A’s will try to get back to their winnings ways Friday night behind left-hander Sean Manaea (11-9, 3.70 ERA).He, too, is looking to bounce back after a rough showing his last time out. Manaea lasted only four innings after allowing six runs on nine hits in a loss to the Astros.Manaea is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two career starts versus the Twins but none this season. The Twins send right-hander Jake Odorizzi (5-7 Devon Travis Jersey , 4.55) to the mound Friday. He, too, scuffled in his last start, allowing four runs over five innings in the Twins’ 5-4 victory over the Tigers.“It was the same command issues that were kind of haunting me all day,” Odorizzi said. “I was behind a lot of counts, even in the middle innings when I was going good. I just need to execute a little bit better.”It will mark Odorizzi’s first start against Oakland since July 17 of last season, when he held them to one hit over seven scoreless innings while with Tampa Bay. He is 1-2 with a 3.34 ERA in five career starts versus the Athletics.
